Malaria is a mosquito-borne infectious disease that is common amongst both humans and animals. It appears with shivering chills and high fever and becomes fatal day by day. Malaria is said to be caused by plasmodium parasites carried by female Anopheles mosquito, mainly between dusk and dawn. With the bite of an infected mosquito in a human, the parasites reproduce speedily in the liver just before contaminating and killing the red blood cells. In this context, Partha Banerjee Mumbai says, there are five types of malaria which affect human beings.
- Plasmodium Falciparum: This is one of the most dangerous forms of malaria. It incubates for 7-30 days after bitten by the insect. The onset is not alarming as it starts with fever and chills which are common symptoms of flu. Further, it continues to cough, diarrhea, renal failure, blood clot, coma, and death.
- Plasmodium Vivax: This is the second dangerous form of malaria. It remains dormant for a few years and then in the form of fever, it starts operating. If left untreated it leads to a blood clot, coagulation of arteries, enlargement of the spleen and ends with vital organs failure, neurological disorders, and other life-threatening issues.
- Plasmodium Ovale: This type of malaria incubates for a few months to 4 years like P. vivax but if ignored it affects the functioning of the Liver and leads to its failure.
- Plasmodium Knowlesi: This is a rare form of malaria found in monkeys and mosquitoes found in South-Asia. It occurs to the travelers who have been exploring the forests. The symptoms occur within 24 hours of being infected and the fever rises or cools off for the next fortnight.
- Plasmodium Malaria: The infection occurs in less than 1% scenarios. It is not fatal, but it is visible with fever and chills.
